Job Overview

This is an ideal opportunity for you to share your engineering knowledge and experience with the next generation of young engineers, who are keen to learn. Job satisfaction comes from supporting these young engineers develop through their academic studies and hands on workshop experience under your guidance. You will also have the opportunity to support students with individual and group project work that can includes aircraft design and manufacture for national student competitions (BFMA/RAeS Aircraft Design and IMechE Autonomous Drone challenges). Finally, you will see the students graduating as professional engineers at the end of their studies.

You will be working in the School of Future Transport Engineering and contributing to our continued success in the delivery of engineering programmes to the next generation of young engineers. You will join a School with high levels of teaching quality and student satisfaction (ranked 7th in the Guardian University Guide 2022 for our courses in Mechanical, Automotive, Aerospace and Manufacturing Engineering).

Main duties of the role

Due to the continued growth and success of our undergraduate and postgraduate engineering teaching, we wish to appoint a Technical Skills Instructor (TSI) in Aerospace to provide technical and practical support to students and staff in the High Performance Engineering Centre. The role will centre on support for the aerospace courses and include activities that range from aircraft maintenance, flight simulation, manufacturing and workshop practice. But the successful candidate will also provide support for automotive, motorsport and mechanical engineering programmes.

Ideally, you will be educated to an apprentice or degree level in an aeronautical/automotive/mechanical discipline and have a good level of workshop technical and experimental skills. Experience of aircraft engineering, design or maintenance would be advantageous but not essential. Relevant industrial or educational experience will also be considered, as will experience in a teaching or practical instructional capacity. You will be willing to work in a flexible manner, be able to work effectively both under your own initiative and as a member of a team and promote and support positive learning to individuals and groups of students.

Successful candidates will be required to support the use of the current engineering facilities including:

  • Wind tunnels
  • Flight and Vehicle Simulator Suites
  • Harrier VSTOL aircraft
  • Additive and subtractive manufacturing
  • Precision measurement equipment
  • Range of specialist engineering rigs

Prior knowledge of any of these types of facilities would be advantageous but training will be provided where necessary.

Shift work is not a requirement in this role, however you will need to work flexibly and support Open Days to showcase our facilities to prospective applicants.

You will have 28 paid holidays per year initially and after 2 years of service this will increase to 30 days
